U. Utah Phillips, Loafers Glory / A Hobo Jungle of the Mind, KVMR Radio Station, 1997-2001

Well aligned with all things The Main Stem, is Utah Phillips' radio show 'Loafers Glory / A Hobo Jungle of the Mind'. Dialogue, tales, field recordings, music, poetry and general ramblings that help to paint a picture of the iconic times in American labour history.

Well aligned with all things The Main Stem, is Utah Phillips' radio show 'Loafers Glory / A Hobo Jungle of the Mind'. I knew of Utah as a folk singer, poet, and being a prominent figure in the labour movements and a self-proclaimed anarchist; but it turns out he was a collector much like I. Years after riding the rails and touring the world singing folk ballads, came hours of sifting through all the tapes he had accumulated; spanning from the early 19th century, to present. He recants the stories he's been told, the times he's had and puts together around 100 hours of radio content covering tramping and labour, through to any topic that has some interest to him. He leads this thing along with kindness and humour, but really it's a cutting together of incredible and mostly unheard (upon release) dialogue, tales, field recordings, music, poetry and general ramblings that help to paint a picture of these iconic times in American history, labour history and the big old beast called industrialisation.

I was very pleased with Episode 77 - Palm Trees and Polotics as Utah tackles one of my other interests - Hawaiian Music. Oo mama!

A one, Duncan Phillips - Son of Utah - has a website with everything you could ever need to know; plus streaming links for the radio episodes and it's digitised Podcast equivalent (Spotify, Apple Music, etc). I will say no more, for he can do all the speaking much better than I.
