Friday 08th - Bridge was Closed.

  • Back on the bikes, left Amsterdam.
  • Boring, monotonous, but easier and more rhythmic.
  • Bridge was closed… had to get a bus which was a bummer.
  • It was the big bridge, was excited for this. Potential trip highlight.
  • Very tired in the evening.
  • Landscape was very uninteresting, as we’ve ventured away from the coast. Long, mundane stretches of agricultural land.
  • Should maybe return to the coast tomorrow

Rest day is over. Sampling culinary delights however, is not.

We're out of Amsterdam a well way and gearing up for this big and beautiful bridge crossing. This was going to be a trip highlight. I had been waiting for this. 32 kilometres of unadulterated North Sea exposure. The reason why you can't find this when you google 'big bridge Netherlands' is because it's actually a dam, built to help control flood waters coming into the coastal provinces. It's name is Afsluitdijk.

The very start of the dam crossing! The cycling path finally pulling up alongside the motorway.

Ba-bow. Turns out the dam's cyclepath had been closed since Covid-19 struck. Leading major repairs to be undertaken during the downtime. Construction would not be finished until 2023. A bus service would be transporting people and cyclists across the dam. All accessible information online at the time of riding.

Jake, trying not to be disappointed. Had we really cycled five hundred kilometres for a bus ride across the dam?

An hour's riding on the other side and we were camped up. So when you're camped up, what better to do then to cycle to the nearest town for some dinner and of course, beers. Despite all hardships, the author wears a smile and gestures a 'good times' hand sign to the camera.

Mis mis mis mis.
