Saturday 02nd - Farewell England
- Realised late last night that Jake had come without his passport.
- Lucky Larni was coming to Rye today for a wedding! Bit of back tracking via railroads from Folkstone to Rye for passport. I stayed in Folkestone with two loaded bikes for half the day.
- Annoyed and lonely and immobile.
- Jake came back with a sarni from Larni. First time eating a prawn sandwich. Nicely done.
- By good coincidence, Brian and Rachel were in Folkestone at lunch time and were able to send us off. It's a long and steep climb to get onto the ridge above Folkestone.
- From there to Dover to meet Pietro!! This section of riding was incredible! Recommend to all.
- We have Pietro and we’re all well and good and stamped out of the United Kingdom. Toot toot. Pietro got a cool bike. Bit embarrassed.
- Glass of Sav Blanc on the deck to celebrate the union and to farewell England - for good!
Mornin' Gloria
En route to Folkestone. Stopped on the promenade for a cortado and a cinnamon roll, the first of many.
Bit of a torturous day minding our two heavily loaded bicycles whilst Jake went to Rye on the train in order to retrieve his passport. A taste of the patience, endurance and acceptance that would come in the following weeks.
His Lordship Brian Jones for the send off out of Folkestone. Big hill ahead of us to crest the ridgeline that will take us out to Dover. Looking forward to seeing Pietro and getting on a ferry to the European mainland.
Steady climbing the monster hill up out of Folkestone.
France on the horizon! We'd be sleeping there tonight.
This ridgeline was a prominent landscape in WWII being right across the channel from France. This massive concrete structure was used to silence the wind and funnel any engine sounds from aeroplanes.
The white cliffs of Dover, where we waited patiently for Pietro.
Pronto, steamin' around the bend on his new bicycle. He had to travel from Edinburgh to Dover, via rail, to meet us for the crossing to France.
Hold me closer, tiny dancer.
Getting that ferry stamp in my passport, to complete my collection of all border crossing stamps now adding the final of four transport modes to my pages.
Gettin' the hell out of there, so long England!
A beautiful albatross.
